Clover Cochran About the ArtistClover Cochran grew into a career in sculpture through her love for horses. At the age of three weeks, complete with cowboy hat, she was in the saddle atop a horse. Growing up on a working cattle ranch in central Texas, she continued to develop as a horseman. The spirit that completes each piece of her work is the ember of that life with horses and nature. Since the first horse she created in her first sculpture class at Southwest Texas State University, Clover has been creating spirited bronze art.
Roger Columbik, her college sculpture professor, stressed the question "what is this piece saying" and did it stand on its own without verbiage. Clover says, "I ask myself these questions as I create each piece, and although I don’t think I have completely reached this, it pushes me to go further in my work." During college, Clover received a job at Michael Hall’s Studio foundry through Roger. Michael and Rosemary Hall taught her the significant details of bronze casting from creation, molding, wax chasing, metal chasing, and patina. "They really took me in and I felt like a family member. I couldn’t have had better mentors at this time in my life." "As my work progresses, I hope to cover the globe in search of ideas. I have already created one series celebrating the Charreada, the Mexican Rodeo. It embodies the spirit of people and their horses, highlighting the skill of their performance." I want each piece I create to have its own spirit, and to leave enough to the imagination so the viewer has a role in completing each piece. I want each creation to speak to the viewer." Clover lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico working for the Shidoni Art Foundry. Since moving to Santa Fe, her idea list grew tremendously. One series will focus on the humorous side to the cowboy’s daily life, and another series will embody the spirit of the Andalusian horse, the strength, balance, power, and willing nature of this horse to work with a human partner. A significant friend found in Santa Fe is Veryl Goodnight. Veryl is a wonderful horse riding buddy and a marvelous mentor on creating a piece of art with attention to the true form, or anatomical correctness, of a piece. Now living in Texas and working for Deep in the Heart Art Foundry, she plans to study with established artists she admires as Clover develops her body of work. Although many of Clover’s works of art are horse related, she creates more than just horse sculpture. A favorite of her own father is a goldfish study. Please contact Clover for more information.
