The Fantail Goldfish

Swimming through the water this graceful creature captures the imagination and inspires calm. Imagine a beautiful school of orange and white fantail goldfish moving just under the surface of a pond layered in green algae. Gracefully one turns direction creating a beautiful display of fins as they softly hang suspended in the water moving the fish where it wishes to investigate next.

A rare few brave ladies have ridden a fox hunt sidesaddle. This piece was commissioned by Roger Philpot of England to commemorate these brave ladies, past, present, and future. Mr. Philpot is a certified sidesaddle riding instructor, and instructor of saddle care. He loves the foxhunt, and admires the ladies who will dare to ride their steed in the proper fashion for a lady, sidesaddle. Although the riders will be well behind the hounds who scent the fox, a hound is included in this piece as it dives under the hedge. Tally Ho!

Engrandezco

Engrandezco roughly translated means to magnify or exhault. The charros I have had the opportunity to meet in San Antonio are masterful horsemen. They care about the horses, cattle, and other animals similar to the way they care for their families, with love and respect. Their rodeo, called the charreada, is not based on timed events. Rather they are judged by the skill, grace,and accuracy demonstrated to accomplish the event. The family environment in which these feats are performed is to be commended, therefore I magnify these men of skill and grace.

La Charra

The Charras of the Charreada or Mexican rodeo ride sidesaddle. The riders are typically the unmarried daughters of charros. These ladies ride fiery, well trained horses. At a gallop the young ladies of the charra group execute intricate patterns in their unique shaped arena. At times the movements they perform take the viewers breath away. This sculpture of a Charra embodies the feeling of strength, energy, and freedom seen when the charras perform.

If you have ever picked up a rope and tried to spin a loop, you can appreciate the grace with which the charros spin their one hundred and twenty-foot ropes. Every action has a purpose, namely to catch the critter in the line of fire of the rope. Much of what these Mexican cowboys can do takes years to develop in style and form. It is a skill passed down from father to son. The various spins of the rope create a captivating performance leading up to the final flick of the wrist to catch the critter.

The humming bird is a fascinating bird to watch through a window or (if you sit still enough) from a chair near their feeding grounds. I was inspired to create this piece from listening to both my grandmothers talk about the hummingbirds that were visiting each year. My favorite thing about humming birds is the sound their wings make as they pass by my ear while working in the garden.
